This Book Began With
Two Women I Loved

Both of my grandmothers believed deeply in being ready for the Rapture. Their faith was not casual, decorative, or reserved for Sunday morning. It shaped the atmosphere around them. Especially for one of my grandmothers, every new day seemed to mean that the return of the Savior was one day closer. The question was never whether he was coming. The question was whether you would be ready when he arrived.

I do not tell this story to mock them. I saw sincerity in their faith. I saw discipline, endurance, prayer, and a longing for a world beyond suffering. But as I grew older, another question began to trouble me: What happens when a person spends so much of this life preparing to leave it that they miss part of the living they were given to do here? I began to see how easily preparation for an afterlife could replace responsibility in this life.

I remain grateful for my grandmothers. Their seriousness about the condition of the soul became part of me. What I question is not their desire to be ready, but the definition of readiness they were given. I now believe that preparation for whatever comes after this life begins with fuller responsibility for this life: telling the truth, repairing harm, protecting the vulnerable, refusing to condemn people merely because they believe differently, and learning to recognize the sacred worth present in every person. If Christ returns tomorrow, a life of love, justice, truth, and mercy will not have been wasted. If no trumpet sounds in our lifetime, that same life will still have mattered. Either way, the work is the same. That is where this book begins.
